The English Patient HOMEWORK 1 1) the setting of the novel. Comment on any clues that help us identify the time and place of the narrative present of the novel as well as other times and places that are being referred to in the narrative. Be as specific as possible about the decade(s) and geographical location(s). The novel takes place in the years during and before WW2 (1930s-40s). The Villa is in Italy as we can tell from the descriptions of the land and the house. We also know that it is the 20th century since it was mentioned during Hanas birthday. We also know that its WW2 due to the Italian campaign that was going on. There is a continuous mention of the enemies being Germans like Caravaggio explaining his hatred towards them (he worked for the British Intelligence) Kip defusing german bombs etc. Some other settings are the Libyan desert in Cairo where Alamasy stayed for a while and England where Kip worked. 2) the characters in the novel.
