1/British democracy is often seen as having ancient roots but full democracy is relatively young. While the monarchy and Parliament have been in place for over 1000 years working-class men gained the right to vote in 1918 and women achieved full voting rights in 1928. However the foundations for democracy in Britain go much further back. Anglo-Saxon England was seen as a time when people were free and equal with loyalty to the king based on his fair rule. This principle laid the groundwork for later democratic ideas in the country. 2/ In 1066 the Normans led by William the Conqueror invaded England. This invasion marked the beginning of what many saw as the loss of the rights and freedoms of the Anglo-Saxon people. The new Norman rulers imposed their own laws and systems which stripped the Anglo-Saxons of many of their long-held rights. During this period the Magna Carta signed in 1215 emerged as a symbolic document that limited the kings authority and protected certain rights. While…
