Margaret Atwoods Surfacing 1) the setting of the novel. Comment on any clues that help us identify the time and place of the narrative present of the novel as well as other times and places that are being referred to in the narrative. Be as specific as possible about the decade(s) and geographical location(s). It is set in Canada the narrators home town (Quebec). It is some type of area where there are mountains forests and rivers/lakes that the narrator describes as they get closer to her childhood home (it is on a secluded island). Other french-canadians live in the same area (we know the narrator is French (but she doesnt speak it) since she mentions how her French has become rusty. Takes place after the decolonization of the country. 1960s- clothes birth control pollution logging British influence. Things/places changing- not recognizable anymore.
